This took entirely too long to get out, partly because I rewrote it once but still >_> I'm sorry, and I sincerely hope the rest will go faster (switching from part time to full time ate at my writing time more than I anticipated but I seem to have some semblance of rhythm back!)

Without further ado!

He was speeding like a maniac, but slowing down seemed unfathomable. As much as he loved Canada, it became just another empty wasteland as soon as he’d crossed the ocean that separated him from her. It was almost surreal how he could live his daily life and be perfectly content, and then nearly suffocate with longing the moment she became more than a distant dream.

But he’d have to torment himself for just a little longer. Business before pleasure. He sped up even more and flipped his cell phone open. It took far too long for the phone to be answered.

“Ice, finally! Get dressed, I’m coming over. Of course now. I’ll be there in two minutes so you’d better be ready,” he said, eyeing a road sign. He snapped the phone shut and grinned, imagining the chaos that must be erupting this very moment.

He would later admit that the first thought to cross his mind when little Rufus opened Ice’s door could have been something a little more intelligible than ‘Dear Mother, he’s keeping cats’. He supposed starvation of interesting female company might do that to a man.

In talking to Ice he realised it was a little more than just keeping cats. It made him proud to see Ice so responsible – which called for a bit of pestering. And the look on his face when he told him he’d be vice-principle alone made the trip worthwhile.

After breakfast it was off to Titus’ office for greetings and an early sip of vodka – nothing better to get the tongue rolling. They passed a very enjoyable two hours before Titus had to be off for a meeting. Stretching, Rocko wondered if he would take a nap after unpacking.

He went out into the hallway and unexpectedly, there she was. The look of delighted surprise was too much for him and he rushed forward to embrace her, twirl her in the air and hold her to him again. She cried out in delight and laughed, really laughed, and buried her face in his chest, breathed him in.

“He didn’t tell me you were coming,” she said.

“Must’ve wanted to surprise you,” Rocko replied.

“I can hardly believe you’re really here,” she sighed. “It’s been so long!”

“Over five years,” he said, and held her a little closer.

“How long are you staying?” she said. He could have sworn she sounded just a little anxious.

“I’m staying until your Prince no longer requires my service, but… Looks like it will be at least a year.”

“A year?” she gasped. He grinned down at her and she smiled.

“I’m going to be taking care of his precious Poseidon while he’s gone. And if you want, he’ll leave you here to help me do it.”

The surprise on her face was obvious, but she recovered quickly.

“Of course he’d need to leave me here. Someone has to keep an eye on you. Mother knows what you’ll do otherwise.” And she smirked.

He burst out laughing. “Ah, still that smart mouth on you, my little ryby. Very kissable. Absolutely not cute.”

He moved his hands up from her waist to cup her face and kissed her passionately. She pressed herself into him, opened her mouth for him. It messed with his head.

“I missed you,” he growled, hands roaming her body.

“Me too, volk,” she moaned.

“Valerie, I…”

“Val? You still around? We forgot…”

Valerie pushed herself away from him right before the owner of the strange voice rounded the corner – from the smell of him a marine Gladiator. Rocko wanted to bare his canines.

“Hi Pebble,” Valerie said, voice slightly monotone and her eyes on the floor. He hated it.

“Oh, hi!” the Gladiator said, walking up to Rocko and holding out his hand. “I don’t think we’ve met before! I’m Pebble. I work here at the school.”

As if that wasn’t obvious. Rocko smiled sourly but shook his hand. “Pleasure,” he said. “We’ll no doubt be seeing lots more of each other.”

The other flashed him a grin, apparently not realising Rocko hadn’t actually introduced himself, and turned back to Valerie.

“We forgot to ask you to get Prince Titus to sign off on the new roster,” he said.

“It’s already been taken care of,” she said, sweetly to the Gladiator’s ears, exasperated to Rocko’s.

“Oh, that’s great. Can’t beat a Servant at her job, I guess! Well, see you later!” He ran off again, waving as he went. Rocko decided he was far too chipper.

Valerie sighed. “Sorry about that. The Gladiator who acted as their captain of sorts was killed recently. They’ve been in organised chaos ever since.”

“Make that regular chaos when you’re not around.”

She smiled but didn’t reply.

“Are you hungry, devushka?” he asked, offering her his arm. “Let’s go have lunch somewhere not here.”

“That would be lovely,” she said.

The first week was a frantic buzz of new things he needed to learn, know, or avoid. Titus and Valerie were by his side all of the time, and it felt just like the old days. Very warm. Very comfortable.

He was reacquainted with the Gladiators he’d helped Titus get, and Delia, and was introduced to all the others – he’d be the boss of them for quite a while, after all. Most of them were pretty okay, but he decided there was something about this Pebble he just didn’t like.

She was by his side all of the time, his Delia. Rocko smiled at Valerie and she smiled back, that secretive little smile he loved so much because it meant either mischief or something just between the two of them.

“Let’s go to dinner, the four of us,” he said when they’d finished all their work for the day. He slung his arm around Titus’ shoulder. “Mother knows you need a little downtime before you two go off gallivanting across the world.”

Titus laughed and looked over at Delia to see what she thought. She smiled and nodded.

“Whipped,” Rocko whispered in Valerie’s ear, loud enough for the others to hear – of course.

She made a face at him, and everyone laughed.

“Yeah, let’s go,” Titus said. “Val, you pick!”

Rocko would feel content looking at the brilliant smile spreading across her face for the rest of his life.

“I know just the place,” she said.

They drove there separately due to the mandatory safety escort. Apparently there was some sort of Vampire problem they were taking very seriously. That meant Valerie rode with him, in his car, while all the Gladiators escorted their Prince.

“They’d let you die without a second’s pause…” Rocko grumbled.

“I have you to keep me safe,” she said softly, and every wolfish instinct in his body flared up. They drove on in silence, as unusual as that was, and felt quite at home.

The restaurant Valerie had selected was a tiny place somewhere, hidden between other buildings, with dark wooden walls and furniture, worn from decades of use, the remnants of smoke and melancholy. It was the sort of place where time seemed to have stood still.

When all the signs inside were in Cyrillic script and the publican addressed them in Russian, Rocko knew exactly why she’d picked it. He pinched her sides and she giggled and smiled that all-knowing smile that he couldn’t kiss off her mouth while they had an audience.

All of dinner was spent in lively conversation. The Gladiators were stationed outside so none of them had to pretend. Titus could play with Delia’s hair. Valerie could look them all in the eye. And Rocko could entangle his fingers with hers under the table.

“Let’s take a detour,” Valerie said on the way back to Poseidon.

“Your every wish…” Rocko smiled, and took a right turn instead of a left at the next crossroad, honking as they went.

He parked right in the middle of the beach – “You’ll get sand everywhere…” “Not in the important places.” – and they looked out at the vast ocean in silence.

Rocko slid his seat back, pulled Valerie into his lap.

“Your hair smells like the ocean, vozlyublennyĭ,” he whispered, inhaling the scent of her.

“You told me that the first time, as well,” she said.

“I can’t remember,” he told her.

“I do. I remember everything. You were all wolf, then. This past week, you’ve been a lot like the man I met back then.”

She shifted in his arms to rest her head on his shoulder and her hands on his chest.

“Ah, devushka,” he sighed.

Afterwards they had no idea who started it, but suddenly she was straddling his lap, her firm bosom pressed up against his chest, her hands in his hair and his slipping under the hem of her dress to caress her thighs. They kissed breathlessly, as if it might be the last chance they would ever have, as if they would never again be able to profess their love this way.

Because she loved him. And he loved her.

He leaned forward, propping her up against the steering wheel so he would have the space he needed to burry his face between her breasts, touch her like he wanted to.

She let him, cradling him against her, kissing his hair while he kissed his way down her neck to the collar of her dress, letting his tongue slip deeper…

His phone rang.

They ignored it.

It just kept on ringing and ringing, and he was just worming his way into her bra when it stopped.

Only to start again right away.

Fuming, Rocko pulled it out of his pocket and snapped it open. Ice.

He answered the call and immediately started threatening severe bodily harm – in Russian.

Valerie understood every word. Ice did not, and happily started chatting. This of course only made Rocko angrier.

“Call me again unless you’re bleeding out on the floor and I will make sure you’re bleeding out on the floor,” Rocko growled. “Got it?”

Without waiting for an answer he snapped the phone shut again. Valerie giggled.

“I haven’t heard you talk like that in decades,” she said.

“I haven’t needed to,” he replied.

Much to his regret she settled back into her own seat, but the desperate mood they had been in was gone, and he couldn’t find it in himself to pull her back into it. He kissed her temple and took her back to Poseidon.

No matter how much water he splashed in his face, he couldn’t seem to wake up. He’d been dreaming all night – another pleasant side effect of the full moon madness. At least it only lasted a few days. Cats still had it worse. He sniggered at that.

But still. When he worked for himself, he could take it easy. Now that he was on someone else’s schedule again, he didn’t have such luxury anymore. He just hoped it wouldn’t mess with his head too much. Or with his… well, you know.

Fortunately the work load was enough of a distraction. But Mother, there were a lot of flirty teenagers at this school. And they all seemed to be picking up on his scent somehow.

“If I see you make eyes at any other of those little kittens in heat, the gloves will come off,” Valerie hissed.

Rocko looked at her and felt a shiver and a thrill race through his body. She was very pissed off. She was also gorgeous and impossibly sexy when she was angry. And did not want to hear that from him right now.

“I can’t exactly help it, ryby,” he said, raising his hands in surrender. “It’s the full moon!”

“You’re a lecher at the best of times,” she retorted. He glared, and it got a smirk out of her.

“Always that smart mouth on you…” he began, but he was interrupted by a cheerful voice.

“There you were, Val! Wanna have lunch together?”

The very suggestion set Rocko’s blood to boil. The idea that this would probably not be the first time they’d had lunch together, made him want to commit bloody murder.

“Sorry, Pebble, not today,” Valerie said, keeping her eyes on the floor and her voice flat as expected, “I still have work to do with mis…”

“Ever ever call me mister, ryby, and I will scale you,” Rocko said.

Valerie clenched her fists and bit her lower lip, drew her shoulders up slightly, trying very hard not to burst out laughing in front of the Gladiator. Rocko was about to grin when he saw the look on Pebble’s face: he was utterly appalled. Clearly he hadn’t caught the subtle undercurrent of humour. Of course he hadn’t.

“It’s a joke,” he deadpanned.

“Of course, sir,” Pebble replied, but he didn’t look very convinced.

“It’s the full moon,” Valerie offered, mirth still in her voice.

“But he…”

“That’s just the way he is,” she interrupted. “Prince Titus is well aware of this behaviour and deems it perfectly acceptable.”

That shut him up, Rocko noted smugly. But he still didn’t like the implication of all this. A Gladiator stepping up for a Servant liked them more than just a little. Perhaps this Pebble had ulterior motives. So a few hours of torture and then bloody murder.

While he was contemplating these pleasant pastimes, Valerie had managed to get Pebble on his way again.

“I better make sure you don’t run into any more Gladiators until the full moon is gone,” she muttered. “Before they all think you’re mad.”

“Only mad about you,” he tried, but she elbowed him in the gut and moved on, leaving him to trail behind her.

“Very kissable,” he murmured. “Very cute.”

She woke up when someone tried to break down her door. She sat up, bleary eyed and confused, half convinced she must have been dreaming. But then the pounding started again.

Groaning she got up and padded across the room, wondering what the fuss was all about.

She opened the door to glare at her uninvited guest, only to become instantly awake when she saw who it was.

Moonlight shone through the windows in the hallway and set his hair off with silver, made his eyes seem even more like those of the wolf he was. He wore nothing but a pair of loose jeans and even those made it very obvious what was plaguing him at this time of the night.

He grabbed her, locked her to his chest and rushed her to bed, slamming the door behind him. He lay her down and crawled over her, buried his face in her nape so he could breathe in her scent, licked his way up her neck to her mouth to devour her.

“Valerie…” he groaned, “vozlyublennyĭ…”

She closed her eyes and opened herself up, let him press kisses wherever he wanted, let his fingers roam everywhere, let him touch her again where no one else had and it had been so long that she’d forgotten just how good it felt to have his warm skin against hers, his weight on her, to taste him and know him and to hear the sounds he drew from her and she from him. She felt like the world was new and the ocean could rush in any moment to cradle them and give them eternity together.

The full moon drove him wild and every so often he would nip at her, growl in her ear, even almost howl. She knew he wouldn’t let her sleep tonight – if she was perfectly honest with herself she didn’t want to get any sleep tonight – and not for the first time she was very grateful that Servant powers worked just as well for exhaustion and sore muscles as they did on combat wounds.

Somewhere between four and five in the morning, when he’d just let her slump back into the pillows so she could catch her breath, she breathed:
“Don’t you ever get tired?”

With the full moon still shining down on him he grinned a very wolfish grin and said:
“Not until dawn, dogoroĭ…”

She laughed and pulled him back down to her.

I hope that this meager offering of Pebble might make life a little more bearable for Goo <3

And the last lines, of course, are dedicated to RZ <3)

Very nice Si, especially the last part :nosebleed: }:) I have to say, my favorite part was the restaurant scene. I could almost see them all together.

I remember the original you wrote, were you unhappy with it? I personally liked the first one a tad better, since it ended with some mystery as to what had happened between Val and Rocko.

Still, very well written. :)

How do you mean you remember the original version? I never even typed those pages out... Do you mean the prologue? I already mentioned there that there would be 2 or 3 more parts... ;)

Thanks for reading!
