March Challenge Animal is:
!!Phyllium Siccifolium!! or better know as: !!Linnaeus Leaf Insect!!

Image

Leaf insects are masters of camouflage, very often predators do not even see them. So well disguised as leaves these insects have the appearance of the veins in leaves and even brown edges and sometimes brown spots like real leaves would have. Leaf insects rock back and forth to look like a leaf that is blowing in the wind. They are born a darker brown colour and turn green after a few days. The females are larger than the males and appear more leaf-like (the featured photo is of a female), but they cannot fly. The males are smaller so that they can fly and access mates more easily.

The eggs of the Linnaeus Leaf Insect take four to six months to hatch, and the nymphs take five to six months to mature. Though sexual insects, the females are parthenogenetic and can therefor lay eggs if there is not a male around. Females grow to be around six to ten centimeters in length, and males get to be around five to seven centimeters.

Leaf insects are nocturnal and feed at night to further elude birds and other predators. They live in Malaysia and Australia, but are sometimes kept as pets by humans. However the Phyllium siccifolium species is not as commonly found in culture, as they are hard to keep. Leaf insects are also prized for how they look and in some places are hunted and mounted in frames to be sold to tourists.

Thanks Mer! And yeah, I figured there might be someone who would have a hard time with this one. ^_^;; Personally I love bugs though lol, and I when I think about spring I tend to think about bugs because they become more active and you start seeing 'em more. Also there just seemed to be a lack of insects in the MAC. ^_~ Haha those sound like some good ideas though! Beauty queen..haha XD love it. You should make an entry! <3 That is, if the insect photos don't bother you too much. ><;

X3; I guess we'll see if a bolt of inspiration strikes me after I finally finish your second page of fanart. ><; Don't slack now Aegs, you're not riding me hard enough about it! XD;;;
