“I hear the girl wasn’t anything special.”

“Then ask yourself why she was killed? Why go through all that trouble?”

“Maybe it was cause she had his jewelry on.”

“If it was Sharks jewelry she wouldn’t have been wearing it in public.”

“You sure?”

“Nobody is stupid enough to cross him. Besides she wasn’t his real main squeeze.”

“Then who was she?”

“Maybe you should go ask the Shark instead of pestering me when I’m at work!”

“No need to be so touchy Frog.”

+ + + + + +

It wasn’t like she hated her job, much the contrary. She loved it. Singing was a passion that started for her when she was a child. Though the only place she could openly sing back home was in church and then everyone sung there. She’d done it since forever, but never in her life did she dream it would be her job. Yes she’d grown and evolved from the days of singing while washing laundry, dishes or hymns to knowing how to sing a jazz ballad just as well as any other singer. Doing her job always made her smile on the inside; however when she had to what she loved as a favor to her best friend it made her feel uneasy. Not that she minded covering for Nessa she’d been doing so for the last couple days while she was out with her new beau, but when the boss sent Daks to come and get her, it did not bode well. Pouting while she buttoned a dress up and slipped on her gloves she could hear the impatient man tapping his foot in her front room, it only made her want to go slower. Today was supposed to be her day off, now she had to go into work and miss out on the gallery she’d bought a ticket to months ago.

“Roselyn let’s go!” Daks voice shouted, his foot falls coming closer to her bedroom.

“Just hold your horses!” She growled out, brushing her auburn hair back from her eyes.

Since when had her boss cared to know where she lived anyway. Stumbling out of her bedroom with one shoe half on she reached for her purse on the counter. Daks rushed over to steady her while she adjusted her shoe. True he was really a goon but he was a polite man; his platinum blonde hair was a high contrast to his impossibly tan skin and tattoo that stretched down his neck and against his face. He’d come from California to her knowledge, flashy smile and smart mouth, Daks had been hired in right away and climbed the ladder quickly. With a quiet thanks they started leaving her apartment.

On their way down the stairs her neighbor who lived on the floor beneath her apartment stuck his head out of the doorway. The man’s eyes were blood shot and his hair was mussed in every direction possible, then again it was always like that.

“Hey! The likes of you needs ta stop stompin round like some Lipizans up there!” Sobre, her delightful downstairs alcoholic neighbor shouted at her and Daks as they walked down the stairs. He was Australian as far as Roselyn could tell and very irritable but still just a prankster at heart.

Smiling softly before Daks shot off his mouth at the poor man. “I’m terribly sorry Sobre, I’ll try to be more quiet.”

With out even a ‘thank you’ or even a ‘you better’ Sobre slammed the door shut much to the displeasure of his sleeping wife who began screaming at him right away. All that was heard was a muffled ‘woman shut up’ accompanied by something about having a hangover. To which his loving wife replied that he ‘always had a hangover’; Daks looked at the door puzzled, then proceeded to shove Roselyn down the stairs hastily fussing over her much like a mother goose her ducklings. God she was such a country girl.

There was a car sitting outside for them, she recognized the driver as Daks shadow, Waka a man that barely seemed to speak English though he claimed it was his first language. Daks opened the door and ushered her inside quickly.

Glancing down at his watch he groaned. “He wanted us there ten minutes ago.” Daks threw himself into the back seat with grumbling for Wakka to start driving.

“Why exactly do I have to be the one to come in on their day off?” Roselyn questioned feeling more than miffed now. “What is wrong with Nessa coming in?”

The silence stretched in the car when Daks grunted and cracked a smile much like the one she saw her boss sport. “Cause you’re the bosses girl.”

Pressing her lips together into a thin line to show her displeasure she didn’t think it necessary to state the obvious that she wasn’t his girl. Instead Roselyn turned her attentions to the streets quietly looking out the window. People seemed to recognize the black Hudson as it rolled down the streets, she only prayed they didn’t recognize her sitting in the back seat. Daks had moved on to complaining about something else and she chose to ignore him. Pursing her lips together tightly Roselyn struggled to remind herself exactly why she’d taken this job in the first place. Oh, that’s right she loved to sing.

+ + + + + +

Roselyn glanced around the smoky room, it was thick tonight, much thicker than usual. Barely able to make out the faces to go with names of the patrons, all she knew was they likely had a cigarette in one hand and a whisky in the other, maybe scotch. Teddy, she knew he was there, standing behind the bar shining up glasses and refilling them as quickly as he could, a scowl on his face gleam in his eye while some drunk blathered on about a woman. Valarie was walking around the club, she could pick that girl out from a crowd of thousands. Black hair with a streak or two of platinum blonde in it she stuck out, looking just barely old enough to be in a club of this sort let alone selling cigarettes. It was a job Roselyn would never be caught dead doing, but the girl said she was happy to find good work.

The moment she stepped foot in the club she dressed up once more in her hand beaded handkerchief dress, one that Titus had made especially for the club. The man hated seeing what he deemed ‘his girls’ dressed in what he saw as rags. Roselyn never dared ware anything she was given outside of the place, instead choosing to leave it safely in her dressing room where she knew nobody would dare take it. Everything was left there, the long matching long gloves, beaded shoes and dramatic emerald encrusted hair piece. She swallowed hard stepping closer to the microphone and forced a smile past her red glossy lips when the band started to play her song. She started singing a tune about paper moons, lost love and daring dreamers.

Her voice was soothing and low, just like she’d been taught by Nessa, nothing like singing in church where the higher tones were shielded by the droning off key of her father and the shrill sound of her tone deaf aunt. Oh if only her dear mother could see her now she’d roll over in her grave. To be singing in a club owned by the Shark of the Shores himself, Roselyn was sure that was a sin somewhere in her conservative mothers book. Soon enough her set was over and the men and women in the room politely applauded her, one or two whistled and it made her blush while she exited the stage smiling politely.

Three of the other singers were standing off stage waiting for her when she made it past the thick black curtains. “That was fantastic Roselyn!”

“Amazing.” Another chirped. All three nodded in unison reminding Roselyn of the porcelain dolls her sisters had owned.

Smiling politely she thanked them until their attention was drawn away by the one called Keki squealing with delight when it was deemed ‘her turn’ to sing and trounced on stage. The other two leaving Roselyn stunned and alone at the bottom of the stairs. A light laugh bubbled up in her throat while she made her way back to her dressing room.

Rounding the corner she was greeted with the sight of a man getting cracked sidelong in the face, he stumbled falling against the wall. A dabble of blood slid from the corner of his mouth while Daks, who appeared out of nowhere, lifted him by his lapel and drew back for seemingly another punch. The man smiled at him for a moment, it was a cruel and sadistic smile one that sent a shiver through Roselyn. “That all you got?” Letting out a small gasp when she heard him Daks head snapped around to her instinctively letting him slip down. A fedora rolled toward her feet and all that Roselyn noticed was the chrome color eyes staring at her coolly. Daks dropped the man slowly straightened the tie around his neck and ran a hand through his curly blonde hair in a vain attempt to tame it. “Move on doll, nothing to see here.” He muttered, not bothering to wipe the blood away from his mouth.

Staring at this man in disbelief and slight wonder she blinked once or twice when Waka came beside her. “Escort her to her dressing room.” The order came from Daks who had the stranger pinned back against the wall again fist rumpling the mans shirt and a hard as nails glare. Waka grasped her by the shoulders and began steering her towards the set of doors on the opposite side of the hall. His accent so thick she couldn’t understand a word he said as she was steered into the open doors. Pushing her in none too gently he slammed the door behind himself. Roselyn heard a scuffle outside the door that quickly began to fade.

She sighed heavily, what an interesting man. She wasn’t stupid and knew that the man she’d just saw was no doubt going to be dead soon, if he crossed Titus that was. Sitting at the mirrored vanity she began pulling the bobbin pins from her hair and delicately loosened the jeweled brocade from her soft brown hair. Placing it in the box on the table she glanced from her reflection to the bouquet of delicate pink roses behind her. An apology from Titus no doubt for dragging her in here tonight. Letting out a another heaved sigh Roselyn decided she didn’t want to know what would happen to that man, it was better left alone anyway.

Being known as the bosses ‘main girl’ was work, zipping the gown up at the side she started complaining to herself. After your set on stage change your gown, gloves, jewelry and most importantly don’t leave with the bosses hardware on. Plenty of rules in the lawless world of the mob. She was about to change into a different gown when Waka came back knocking on the door. “Boss said he aint gonna need yous here ta‘night. Go on home.” Unceremoniously he shut the door leaving her alone again.

With a heavy frown she stared at the spot where he stood for a moment, then smiled to herself. “Fantastic.” ‘Just enough time for me to miss the gallery all together.’ She finished in her head.

After changing into her street clothing and telling a disappointed Valarie she wasn’t going to be able to stay that night Roselyn began her walk home. Truly she was only eight blocks from her apartment but frequently she’d take detours and visit a few shops on the way back; tonight she would have to stop at the fruit market and the bakery on the way home, but her all time favorite place to stop was the flower shop three blocks from her house.

Asian tiger lily’s were her favorite when mixed with white daisies, they always made her smile and the shop owner seemed to know that always keeping them on hand for her even when they were out of season. The orange lily’s reminded her of the garden her mother had kept back home, the daises of playing in the fields with her sisters making crowns of flowers. Carrying them along with her down the street home she smiled to herself, she hadn’t had a free night in a while. Save for her disappointment in missing the gallery she was looking forward to a Titus free night of reading.

The echoing groan from the nearby alley should have told her that her night was going to be ruined, but it didn’t. Stopping dead in her tracks at the mouth of the alley there was nobody on the streets save for her. Hesitantly and against her better judgment she took a few steps down the shadowy litter strewn side street. “Hello?” Her voice echoed off the walls peering into the shadows she made out the faint outline of a limp body propped against the building.

Roselyn’s blood ran cold. Horrible things began to run rampant through her mind. What if he was a hit? What if he was faking and there were others waiting to take advantage of her? What if he tried to kill her? What if he was dead, she’d be prime suspect number one. Then they’d expect her to flip on Titus and tell them everything she knew which was zilch! Oh no, what if... the man groaned once more it was softer and strained, his head lolling to one side. Wandering slowly up to him she glanced him over realizing slowly that he looked familiar. Cautiously she nudged him with her foot, when he groaned again she knelt down beside him, his face wasn’t caved in so that was good. When his eyes blearily opened blinking a few times she shrieked stumbling backward and clutching the bouquet of flowers close to her chest.

“Still your screaming doll!” He snapped at her reaching up to touch a bruise on his head, grunting when he felt the swollen lump and then reaching behind himself he pulled a dented and smudged fedora he'd been laying on. Muttering something about it being his favorite hate he looked at it with a grimace. Glancing upwards steel gray eyes locked on her with a half swollen shut eye his jaw set in recognition. “You’re the Sharks girl.”

Roselyn knew where she’d seen him now, insulted she snorted at him. “I sing in his club if that’s what you mean you inconsiderate whelp.” She snarled out the insult before she could stop herself. Her brown eyes growing wide in partial surprise while she bit her lips into a thin line.

His gray eyes grew wide and his overly high forehead wrinkled in shock, a slight shark grin spread on his face and Roselyn could feel her insides start to coil in dislike. He let out a breathy laugh wincing and grabbing at his ribs. “Kitten has a temper I see.” Wincing in pain as he tried to stand up, Roselyn reached down for his hand out of instinct. “Sharks girl wanting to help out?”

Rolling her eyes she reached down to him, grabbing hold of his hand and pulling with all her might. She hadn’t been on the farm in years but she still knew how to get an taco to move. “You need to get cleaned up.” She stated obviously. “My place isn’t far from here, I can clean you up and you can be on your way.” She floated outside of her body absolutely mortified that she’d just said that aloud. Yes her mother would be rolling over in her grave now, Roselyn could feel her face burning with embarrassment but she still held tight to his hand.

Placing the bent out of shape fedora on his head, the man took a staggering step forward, Roselyn steadied him placing her hand on his shoulder. “You never did tell me your name.” Pulling his arm around her shoulders she felt the dig of something hard in her hip, it made her stomach knot with fear until he pulled it out, a tin flask engraved with some crest.

“Names Cleatus.” He said his voice rough with pain as he took a nip. “Yours?”

She paused looking at him out of the corner of her eye. “Roselyn.” Taking the labored steps towards her apartment she began guiding him towards the freight elevator in the back.

“Ah. Sweet, sweet Rose.” He mocked as best he could while limping along side of her.

Roselyn knew then, that she would hate this man. What kind of name was Cleatus anyway?

Here we go Part Two. Fingers crossed people, prepare to be plotted. lol
Next part will be out middle of this week since it's a bit fluffy in my opinion. Less gruesome roads a head in comparison to the first part.

I'm not good at giving comment, but I just want to let you know that you have more reader than you thought you had =)
Thank you for part 2, had fun 'watching' it on my mind as I read it =)
My English was not so good, though, so, I just want to confirm my reading comprehension.
So, the one being bullied by Daku, er, Daks was Cleatus?

Yes. Daku (Daks) was beating up Cleatus and ended up dumping him away from the club.
